From their humble beginnings as a car and bike service garage to their current status as a subsidiary of the Qianjiang Group, Benelli produces over 1.200.000 vehicles every year in a state-of-the-art factory located in Wenling, about 500 km away from Shanghai.

The Legacy

The company was started in 1911 as a service garage by Teresa Benelli when she invested all the capital of her family to establish a workshop for her six sons. However, the six Benelli brothers had much bigger plans, which paved the way for the launch of their first engine in 1919—a two-stroke 75cc motor applied to a bicycle frame. Two years later, they ventured into manufacturing motorcycles with the “Velomotore”, a 98cc two-stroke lightweight bike. The Velomotore was released in Touring and Sport (125cc) models followed by a 147cc version in 1923.

Building on the popularity of their early models, the company began making racing bikes with which Tonino Benelli, the youngest of the six brothers, took to the racetrack to bring home several trophies and set records.

When the company was at the peak of success, their production facility was destroyed during the Second World War. However, the Benelli brothers did not lose heart and started converting about 1000 military motorcycles into bikes for civilian use. In 1948, they hired motorcycle racer Dario Ambrosini who won the 1950 World Championship in the 250 class.

Further Expansion

Over the years, Benelli earned international recognition as a top manufacturer of bikes. All of this success helped the company to expand and eventually establish itself as a leader in the world of motorcycles. In December 2005, the brand became a part of the Q.J. group. Winner of the best motorcycle exporter of the year award, Qianjiang is a corporation based in Wenling, where 14.000 people produce more than 1.200.000 vehicles and two million engines per year in an ultra-modern manufacturing facility.
