Fast, sleek, and powerful, personal watercraft or PWC are a popular choice. Many different brands manufacture these fun marine crafts, but Sea-Doo was actually the first! This quick history of personal watercraft will tell you what you need to know.

Initial Invention

The first personal watercraft was created by Norwegian-American motorcyclist and inventor Clayton Jacobson II. Jacobsen crashed his motorcycle into a ditch and realized that it might be better if he could get the same adrenaline rush from riding a motorcycle with less danger. He decided to invent an “aquatic motorcycle” that could be ridden on water, and thus the very first personal watercraft was developed.

The First Sea-Doo® PWC

Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) is the brand that elected to put the first PWC on the market in the 1970s. Their large, yellow watercraft was named for their Ski-Doo line: the Sea-Doo. However, the company knew improvements were needed, so it came off the market, only for the Sea-Doo PWC to make a massive splash during the 1980s as one of the most popular watercraft brands out there.

Today’s Models

Personal watercraft, including those made by Sea-Doo®, have come a long way in recent years. They are safer, faster, and more convenient than ever before. Thoughtful storage options, modular seating that can be added and removed, and stronger engines make it easy to find a personal watercraft that meets your needs.
